The potential of web 2.0
Much research has been done on the ways we are influenced by the media. The movies we watch and the books we read all contribute to our sense of self. Could tweets have the same effect? Can web 2.0, more specifically health 2.0, fundamentally change the way we look at ourselves as patients? I think it is beginning to. The simple fact that more and more patients are looking online for information is a testament to their desire to play a more active role in their health. Is this the patient of the 21st century? If so, how do we engage more patients? Imagine a chorus of twitter-ers (sorry I'm new to twitter, still trying to get the lingo down) tweeting about how they are rewriting the discourse on "patientness." For example, "My doc and i just had a wonderful discussion about my treatment, we both worked together to create a plan that worked for me." Rather than a situation where the patient is passively involved or the doctor creates a plan with little regard for the patients concerns. Could such a social revolution in the role of a patient be started on twitter? I think web 2.0 has the potential.
