The year is 1782. Night after night, and years after that, William and Caroline Herschel worked at their telescopes. Many of their discoveries were a surprise to them. Some came from a studied and methodical mapping of the skies, but the revelations themselves were not willed. They came from a lifetime of dedication and the building of expertise. They came from uncertainty and curiosity.
The Herschels experimented and they exhibited a willingness to try things. They needed a lifetime of tinkering and error without regard for financial return, in order to achieve what they did. They grew a certain knowledge, a specialty. They propelled a study, astronomy in an entirely new direction. They innovated.
Do the realities of our mercantile age make it impossible for people to work away at their passions without the promise of a monetary return?
William and Caroline Herschel did have a benefactor, through the Royal Society led by its President Sir Joseph Banks, and ultimately, from the purse of the crazy King George. Was their world subject to any less financial pressure than ours? Did they need wealth and a kind of fame to continue? Absolutely. A Royal Garden Party at their country laboratory was held to showcase the new and grand telescope in the making? It was an investor’s showcase if ever there was one. The Duchess of This and the Duke of That with various other members of royal designation all climbed aboard their carriages for the Astronomer’s Picnic. It was a jolly day. The hats were big. The smiles were broad. So, the king came forward with the loot after the event, but he was miffed. He felt the decision to fund or not to fund had been taken from him by the, picnic generated, enthusiasm of the court. The hero astronomers were simply too popular to deny.
The McKinsey Company series, entitled What Matters presents an interview with CEO of the X Prize Foundation, Peter Diamandis. Mr. Diamandis discusses the importance of a prize in the world of innovative technologies. He points to the reality that the most risky of ideas, which are sometimes the most innovative, cannot get off the ground because of funding restrictions. The need for companies to show return to investors or shareholders at year end makes it very difficult for the average CEO to take risks. If things go wrong they must confront a hostile board. He says a “properly structured” prize “...allows for balance-sheet risk taking.” Governments can only invest so much in these ventures too, as leaders require re-election and are accountable to even the most ordinary-minded of voters. Mr. Diamandis talks about the creation of heroes of innovation as a public relations tool.
Sir Joseph Banks understood the hero model as a fundraising tool. Banks was quick to announce and celebrate the Herschels’ discoveries of comets, moons, and nebulae. After all, as President of the Royal Society, his reputation was on the line too. Success was essential. The Herschels and Joseph Banks were in a state of high stress when the forty foot telescope financed by King George was slow to produce results. The King was further agitated. Banks who had the job of reporting directly to the Royal offices was, himself, pressuring the astronomers to produce. The astronomers worked under stress and growing exhaustion. There were all sorts of difficulties with the mirrors, moisture in the glass, the shifting of weights and problems of construction. These all caused waste in the budget and anxiety in the creators.
The Crown and the Royal Society were proud of the Herschel discoveries particularly as they played against the achievements of the Observatoire de Paris. This matter of Empire pride, along with Joseph Banks’ hero-making picnic, are what helped keep the Herschels financed.
What are the variables that today hold the iron pincers on the pulse of research and start-up? Do they spring open on the energy of public pride? Will they release the goods based on promise of financial return? Where do the issues of mind, money and momentum come together in 2009? How tightly are they linked? Was their co-dependence ever thus, and will it ever be? Will mind never be free from the practical notions, outside a well-financed and tenured university model? How do we weigh the value of life’s non- practical or non-utilitarian considerations with their very opposite?
There have been many mathematicians who’ve proudly spouted on about math’s uselessness. Those very thinkers, who celebrate mathematics as an end in itself, have provided tools for other people of utilitarian inclination. Maybe a certain social maturity comes with an understanding of the absence of polarities. As a society maybe we have to understand the combination of thought and utility as a human reality. It’s a notion that makes the earth quake. Surely there are ideas for ideas sake. Maybe, but once ideas are formed they just flow out into the world. Maybe what we’ve always seen as separate and, in fact functioning on a higher plane, when purely themselves, are incomplete and still when un-combined. Maybe we just can’t help ourselves from being an applied species.

That an application of ideas to tangibles might be seen as virtue, folly or a characteristic of only one part of the world’s population doesn't sound right. We’re just not that glamorously varied from east to west. We can layer ourselves over with methods, mythology, styles of thinking, and cultural characteristics, but i don’t think we’ve evolved long enough to be different from each other. Ultimately our basic human construction takes over. I wonder if the distinction between east and west so referenced in religion, art and philosophy is an outdated one. At one time it seemed important but now it seems a bit, well, only political, socio and economic. In other words, it’s not fundamental.
I know there is a tendency to think of the “western world” as a land of linear thinking, driven only by logic, lacking in poetry and cosmically stunted. However, i think that the opinion that western society advances, scientifically, only through logical construction is mistaken. At some time in any successful “western” scientific investigation newness is born from an intuitive leap, sensitivity to the mysterious, or out of creativity, qualities that have often been attributed to eastern culture. I don’t think any western thinker who has experienced the phenomenon of being responsible for a significant discovery, would deny it, no matter the logical building blocks employed along the way.
It might be nice to think that a part of the world could live in a state other than a utilitarian or “applied” one, but i don’t think we’ve evolved that far. We're all pretty much the same. Did Ghandi have laundry? Was Beethoven disconnected from the cosmos?
