Isle of Kos and the Idea of Hippocrates’ Four Humours

My friends have been sailing off the island of Kos. I think that’s pretty wonderful and ponder what their days are like. Surely they awaken early, with the water lapping the edge of the boat, the sun shining into the portholes and streaming in a narrow beam down the slightly opened hatch. They hear the fishermen coming back with the catch, whistling and shouting as the day’s take is heaved, up, onto the stone docks. They’ll emerge, with hair still wound by the previous day’s wind, and look positively Ancient Greek.

Then I remember. Hippocrates was from Kos, Hippocrates who was of the four humours, and so much more. Yes, the four humours were to represent all the fluids of the body: blood, black bile, yellow bile and phlegm. That’s a nasty representation of the human self. It’s not a description of the person, though. These are the fluids of illness. Well, it wasn’t a totally crazy notion. When Hippocrates saw an over-abundance of phlegm he prescribed citrus. When the humours are out of balance, Hippocrates said, illness sets in.

The four humours are drawn out compass style. As is north, south, east, west, so is blood, black bile, yellow bile and phlegm. Did he come up with this notion as a child of Kos? Did it have something to do with living on an island? Did it have something to do with so much dependency on travels by sea? An awareness of the horizon in all directions does much to influence the mind, as any sailor can attest who has looked out on a still sea with no land in sight. Schubert wrote a powerful song to this effect, "Meeres Stille" set to Goethe’s poem. It can be terrifying to we mere mortals, as Goethe wrote “Todesstille fürchterlicht!” (Dead calm, terrifying?) I wonder if things innovative come from the natural conditions of our lives. Is our ability to think guided by our environment? To think in a manner that is clear and fresh, do we have to allow a certain sensuality or poetry flow through us? Does poetry come only from the natural world? Is poetry all about the senses, and is rich ingestion of things empirical necessary to inspire even the most abstract of notions?

When the anchor is pulled and the sailboat moves away from the shore and into the wind, will the compass in its fundamental earthliness inform the sailors aboard that ship in a way that is more than a pointing of the thumb, “that-away”? Will the very basic magnetic properties of this earth, the water on which they travel, the air that blows through their tresses making them look like demi-gods, and the fire in the galley that made the morning coffee help them think of things in a way that is uninformed by banal predispositions of the world? Will it allow them to recreate their world view? Is this from where innovation comes? Does everything truly innovative ignore assumptions, and chart a course according to the simplest notions and, what seems to be, the magnetically true? Was it necessary to Hippocrates’ innovative thinking that he lived on the island of Kos?

Is where we live and how we respire with our environment the very seed of our thinking? Do we need to be willing to engage the most elemental of our earthly selves in order to think afresh?
