Jane's Voice: Trust, Innovation, and Humility

Trust. There’s a lot of talk about trust these days. It’s mostly about money. Can we trust the banks, the stock broker or the realtor? It’s also about health though. Why get a test? The results are unreliable. Why get a test? My doctor won’t look at the results.
Do you trust your doctor? What is trust? When is the element of trust brought in to any relationship? It’s about vulnerability. We feel compelled to trust when we are looking for something. Sometimes we are just looking for a higher level of meaning in a relationship. We don’t want to have secrets and we think that by trusting, revealing our vulnerable side, we will enhance the depth of the commitment to another. Sometimes we feel compelled to trust when we need the assistance of another.
We trust a broker with our investment dollars because that broker or bank can do something with our equity that we cannot. They can take our money and grow it to a quantity that will serve us in the future. We think. A path-breaking 2002 article by Tony Simons in the Harvard Business Review looks at the hotel-industry study and shows a strong association between profitability and how workers perceive their managers' behavioral integrity.
Trust and Vulnerability in the Doctor’s Office
What about the trust with which we initiate a relationship with a doctor? We present ourselves in our most vulnerable condition to another individual. We participate in a proscribed relationship that says: because this person has a certain accreditation we will find help from him or her, and they will not violate our trust. There is more than one way for trust to be violated but for the sake of moving along let’s just pretend that a violation of trust is understood.
Trust and Financial Engineering
In the financial world, trust was busted when the entire system broke down. Rapacious profit making on the part of the “experts” led to the suffering of all. Incompetence led to a new age of scepticism. Is there a similar breakdown occurring in healthcare? Has the patient lost trust in the system? Has the patient lost trust in the doctor? Are we simply in an age where the patient is more informed and is expecting the healthcare professional to communicate with them on a more sophisticated level and when the professional proves ill-equipped to do so, the reed of trust breaks down? The communication problems might suggest a deficiency in professional training. Perhaps medical schools need to establish new ways of training a doctor to deal with a new age of medicine. Are the schools still teaching a pre-knowledge, pre-electronic age of patient interaction?
Perhaps the healthcare system is crumbling in a new electronic age, in just the way the financial world could not keep up with, technology as noted by Nassim Taleb. The author refers to the Blackberry’s impact on information gaps that had, prior to the advent of the device, allowed a window for speculative trade. With the advent of the Blackberry the gaps disappeared and the folly in the information gap was exposed. That’s why the crash happened so fast. Once the gap was closed, there was no hiding the seemingly spurious leveraging. Maybe this closing of the information gap is also affecting healthcare.
The Promise of Humility to Close the Trust Gap
Maybe the health professional is not equipped to address the concerns of the new knowledgeable patient. Perhaps the only way any human being can function in this knew omni –ish age is to act in partnership from a position of humility and genuine good will. Doctors who admit ignorance when they don’t know an answer will be trusted by a patient. In years gone by doctors were trained to inspire a sort of awe and thus gain the confidence of patients. Part of the rationale for this was that it would be comforting to the patient to think that the doctors knew what they were talking about. Most patients now have a more sophisticated understanding of medical process. The age of posturing just might be over.
Trust is important in any professional relationship and in any important human interaction. Healthcare professionals need to nurture this. Patients need to expect this and actively participate in its creation. Healthcare systems need to earn it through good governance, policy and oversight and, most effectively, through the ongoing work of good people.

Who among us simply grants trust to others and who requires trust to be earned? What are the implications for each cohort in our society and for our society? I would suggest the answer to this question could have a profound affect on the quality, depth and resulting value of relationships and resulting progress for individuals, groups and society. Where an individual/community cohort places a requirement that trust must be earned are they not then part of a group who are slower to innovate or progress in whatever undertaking they have; business, academic or social? Are individuals pre-supposed to one path or the other or is that attitude learned by experience - double cross, misrepresentation? It is a life attitude learned or otherwise, how we address relationships. Where we simply grant trust to others we are positioned to benefit more and faster in all our relationships, in all our work efforts we advance. Is the grant of trust then evolutionary? If the grant of trust is compromised, we move on and hope that our attitude is not jaded. If it must always be earned we form our camps, we set up our barriers, we stagnate, we are mired slow to advance and simply left behind.
