6 Essential Prep Steps to Take Before Getting Laser Hair Removal

The last thing you want to happen while wearing a revealing dress for a formal event, or a swimsuit as you relax by the poolside, is to find your body hair out in full view.

Trying to hide your hairy legs and arms by wearing long pants, dresses, and tops with long sleeves is not an option during the summer. It is not something that you can do all the time if you live in a place where the weather is warm all year round, either.

Getting rid of unwanted body hair should be your priority if you want to avoid a lot of embarrassing situations. It is also important if you want to feel confident regardless of whatever you’re wearing. And if you always want to look glamorous in person and in photos, you need to keep your body free from excess hair all the time.

A Painless, Hassle-Free Way to Get Rid of Unwanted Body Hair

Shaving, waxing, and plucking are the three most common ways of removing body hair. Unfortunately, they are the most time-consuming and painful hair removal techniques as well.

If you find shaving and waxing regularly to get rid of unwanted body hair too bothersome, go for a more stress-free option: laser hair removal.

The best laser hair removal procedure in Kuwait will allow you to achieve painless hair reduction within a few treatments. It is quick, non-invasive, and will leave your skin softer and smoother.

With this type of hair removal process, a laser is used to destroy the individual hair follicles under the skin. You will see a significant reduction in your body hair after six to eight treatments.

Since some hair may still grow after the treatment, you will need to get touch-up treatments every six to 12 months to get rid of them.

Preparing for the Procedure

A typical laser hair removal procedure can last anywhere from several minutes to a few hours. The duration can be short or long, depending on the size of the area to be treated and the type of hair and skin tone you have.

Being fully prepared for the treatment can help speed up the process as well. More importantly, you will be sure you will get the best results from the procedure.

Below are six steps you need to take to be properly prepared for a laser hair removal procedure:

1.     Inform your dermatologist or laser hair removal technician of any medication you are using

Before scheduling your first session, tell your dermatologist or laser hair removal professional about all the oral and topical medications you are using. These include birth control pills, antibiotics, acne medications, and photosensitizing medications.

This is because certain medications can intervene with your laser treatments, thereby making them less effective. Additionally, some topical medications can make the skin sensitive and burn or blister easily.

You won’t be asked to stop taking or using these medicines; the dermatologist or laser technician will adjust your treatment accordingly and will be more cautious and observant during each session.

2.     Avoid sun exposure

At least two weeks before the procedure, make sure you stay out of the sun. If going out is unavoidable, ensure that the area to be treated (your leg, arm, face, etc.) is covered completely. Always use a broad-spectrum sunblock with an SPF of 30 or above every day as well.

In case you have a tan from sun exposure or sunless tanning products, wait until the tan completely fades before scheduling your first laser hair removal session.

3.     Stop waxing and plucking temporarily

Since laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicles, it is important that you avoid plucking or waxing the treated area at least four to six weeks prior to the first session.

Laser appointments are typically scheduled at eight- to 10-week intervals. If you need to get rid of some growing hair within this period, you can resume waxing and plucking. However, you have to stop doing them again four to six weeks before the next session.

4.     Avoid using certain skincare products

If Botox injections, chemical peels, dermal filler injections, and microdermabrasion are part of your skin care regimen, avoid them for at least 14 days before the procedure.

In case you are using some anti-aging products, check their ingredients. If they contain alpha hydroxy acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and other substances that cause photosensitivity, skip using them temporarily. They may cause you to develop some irritation.

5.     Shave the area to be treated

Your dermatologist or laser hair technician will ask you to shave the area to be treated 24 to 48 hours before the appointment. This will ensure that the hair follicles are visible, but since the hair is short, the chances of getting burns will be reduced.

Shaving the treated area will help you avoid feeling some pain and discomfort during the process as well.

6.     Cleanse your body

On the day of the procedure, take a bath. However, do not apply any moisturizing lotion or creams, especially on the area to be treated. Avoid spraying on perfume as well.

It is best not to put on any makeup on the day of your appointment. But in case you did, make sure to thoroughly cleanse the treatment area and leave it free of cosmetics, lotions, and creams at the skin care center before the procedure begins.

By following the prep tips above, you will get the best results from the procedure. And you will always feel confident and be able to show off smooth, silky skin, regardless of whether you’re wearing your favorite evening dress for a night out or your favorite swimwear by the pool.
