5 Skincare Tips to Keep Your Skin Fresh and Clear

It’s a fact. We all want beautifully clear, radiant skin. There are many factors that can contribute to the overall health and appearance of your skin, from environmental factors and genetics, right down to the products we use, and the foods we eat. Using natural hair styling products is a good way to protect your skin, but there are also a few other elements that will help you keep clear skin.

In this article we have assembled a few of our best skincare tips for maintaining healthy skin that looks and feels flawless and beautiful.

1. First Line of Defense – Proper Diet

The foods we eat can be a major contributing factor to the look and feel of our skin. Greasy fried foods that are high in fats can contribute to poor complexion and skin blemishes. Foods with high salt content serve to dehydrate your body from the inside out.

The foods we eat are digested and broken down into vitamins, minerals and amino acids, and other nutrients that your body can use to build healthy skin.

Crash diets or diets consisting of highly processed foods do not contain the proper nutrition that your skin needs, meaning that your skin won’t be as strong and supple as it could be. For example, if you don’t eat enough protein, you are depriving your skin of the amino acids that help your body produce skin strengthening collagens and elastic tissues which make skin supple.

2. Maintain Proper Hydration

Doctors highly recommended that you drink about 64 fluid ounces, or one gallon of water per day. If you drink a lot of beverages that are high in sugars or caffeine content, if you smoke, or do anything else that could cause dehydration, you should drink a few more glasses than normal to compensate. Drinking enough water is imperative if you want to keep your skin looking beautifully radiant.

3. Moisturize

Proper skin moisture is essential for maintaining the lovely skin we all desire. It’s best to apply a hydrating moisturizer right after you get out of the bath or shower. Applying moisture to damp skin helps to lock in essential moisture and hydration. Just as we recommend using natural hair styling products, we also recommend using moisturizers that are free of harsh chemicals, and cruelty free.

Depending on your skin type, there are a plethora of moisturizers to choose from, but the good news is that there are moisturizing products available for all complexions, from dry and acne prone, to oily skin, there is a product that is right for you.

4. Exfoliate Regularly

As part of your regular skincare regimen, it is absolutely essential to exfoliate your skin once or twice weekly. DIY skincare masks are wonderful to use every now and again, but it is extremely important to use products that contain active ingredients such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to detoxify your skin and kill any bacteria that may be hiding in or on it.

It’s also a generally wise idea to use an exfoliant that is free of microplastics. Many exfoliant scrubs contain microbeads that do not break down, and end up in rivers, lakes, and eventually the ocean, contaminating natural habitats, and polluting the water supply. Beautiful skin is not worth the cost of further damaging the environment. However, with so many natural product on the market, that is a sacrifice that we need not make.

5. Choose a Cleanser for Your Skin Type

Everyone should have a good cleanser as part their skincare routine. At night a cleanser is good for removing makeup and grime buildup that may have accumulated throughout the day, and in the morning it will remove any oil that may build up on the skin overnight. Cleansers also clear impurities and kill bacteria to prevent blemishes and whiteheads.

Choosing between different formulations of cleanser is a matter of preference but no cleanser should make your skin feel dry, irritated, or uncomfortable.  If you have dry, acne prone, sensitive skin, a creamy cleanser is more gentle on the skin. If you use a longwearing makeup or waterproof sunscreen, these can dehydrate your skin. Using a cleansing oil prior to your regular cleanser is a good way to ensure that your skin is thoroughly cleaned.
